Point the client to a higher power (God as the latter understands Him), who is able to sustain recovery (12-Step Facilitation)
Immediately interrupt the progression of disease through abstinence from alcohol and other drug use [Relapse Prevention training].
Educate both the client and the family about the natural history of the disease and the consequences of not treating it [ Psycho- education].
Teach new coping skills and the tools necessary to change thinking and behavior, allowing the patient to meet life's challenges without returning to alcohol or drug use [ Life Skills training].
